“King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh suffered an attack this afternoon (…) in the context of the continuous and flagrant attacks directed against civil aviation facilities in the kingdom,” said the General Authority of Civil Aviation in a statement, noting that “operational operations at the airport have been temporarily suspended.”

It assured that the new Houthi aggression “has resulted in several injured people, whose number is currently being worked to quantify.”

The official Saudi authority has not given details about the injuries or damage to the airport, although it assured that the temporary suspension of operations will continue “until the assessment of damages concludes and the safety of the facilities is verified, in coordination with the competent authorities.” It also noted that “further updates will be announced later.”

Various media have reported that Saudi authorities have evacuated one of the airport halls, and that several ambulances have been seen heading to an area of the airfield, one of the largest in the Middle East.

According to data from the flight tracking website Flight Radar, Riyadh airport has registered the cancellation of 314 flights this Saturday, while delayed departure operations totaled 222 this afternoon.

This is the second Houthi missile attack on Riyadh airport in the last 24 hours, after the one yesterday, Friday, which caused the death of three people and damage to a Saudi airline plane and other facilities.

Last Wednesday, Saudi authorities also announced the death of three other people and more than 30 injured, of various nationalities, in similar attacks by Yemeni insurgents against the airports of Riyadh and Abha, the latter in the southwest of the Arab kingdom.

The Houthis, backed by Iran, have claimed responsibility in recent weeks for several drone and ballistic missile attacks against Saudi civilian and military facilities, including airports and energy installations.

The Yemeni rebels claim that their aggressions against the Arab kingdom are a response to Saudi Arabia’s aerial bombardments against their positions in Yemen in support of the offensive by forces loyal to the internationally recognized Yemeni government.
