An allied militia of the Ethiopian Army claimed on Saturday to have regained control of Adigrat, in the northern region of Tigris and near the border with Eritrea, after Eritrean troops were repelled from that strategic city.

“Adigrat is free! The atmosphere here today is wonderful!” affirmed the Tigray Peace Forces (TPF) on the social network X. The TPF is a militia formed by dissidents of the rebel Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) and is now allied with the Ethiopian Army.
“Residents of all streets,” it emphasized, “received the TPF and the ENDF (Ethiopian National Defense Force) with great joy and relief. The cowards of the TPLF and Shabia (a colloquial name for the old Eritrean People’s Liberation Front, now used to refer to the Eritrean Army) have nothing to do here anymore!”
The militia published a video supposedly showing locals celebrating the entry of ENDF and TPF troops, although EFE could not independently verify these images. “The people have spoken, and that is exactly why we have won. PEACE!” concluded the TPF.

Last Thursday, the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), a US non-profit organization that monitors conflicts worldwide, indicated that “Eritrean forces that had crossed the border through Zelambesa on October 7 spent the night withdrawing from Adigrat.”
“During the withdrawal, drone attacks—allegedly launched by the ENDF—targeted vehicles transporting troops and equipment, and loud explosions were heard well into the morning,” ACLED added.
Eritrea rejected accusations of aggression from Ethiopia on Friday, whose army is fighting the TPLF in Tigray, and blamed Addis Ababa for undertaking “an unprovoked war of aggression” against Asmara, amidst fears that the conflict in northern Ethiopia could escalate into an international conflict.
This Thursday, Ethiopia’s Foreign Minister, Gedeon Timothewos, had demanded the “immediate withdrawal” of Eritrean troops from Tigray, a country that Addis Ababa accuses of supporting the TPLF.
