Mass demonstrations today in New Delhi demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar were met with arrests and police violence. Tens of thousands gathered in India’s capital New Delhi to partake in a national mobilization calling for Kumar’s ouster, accusing him of manipulating voter rolls in favor of the ruling, far-right Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, the Delhi Police prevented the march from proceeding, using violence and mass detentions to suppress the protests, metro stations and major roads were also shut down ahead of the protest to prevent people from participating. The leadership of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) as well as Politburo members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), including former Keralam Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, reportedly remain in detention. 👆 Read more about what is behind the protests on our website
