“I speak for all immigrants. I am going to fight for them, for those who have been deported, for those who have been locked in there for a long time.” Martin Soto was detained by ICE back in February while picking up diapers for his 11-month-old. While at Delaney Hall, Soto led a hunger strike to protest the brutal conditions in detention. He was later transferred to Elizabeth Detention Center in May, where he spent four months in solitary confinement as retribution for his organizing. At a Friday press conference, after eight months in detention, he spoke to reporters about what went through his mind during that time. “I was begging and asking God not to abandon me,” Soto said. He urged those who oppose Trump’s anti-immigrant policies to come together, optimistic that “if we are all united together, we can put an end to this government.”
