“All they do is terrorise this city.” Protests broke out in New York City after an ICE agent shot a man in a car while his 5-year-old son was in the back seat – then removed him from hospital in an unmarked vehicle. In the wake of the shooting, mayor Mamdani called for the abolition of ICE. The incident has sparked debate among the mayor’s supporters, with some arguing that – even though he does not have any direct power over federal agents – there is more he could do to curb their activity, including by holding the New York City Police Department (NYPD) to account. The NYPD has been accused of working with ICE, despite the fact New York’s sanctuary city status limits cooperation between the city and federal immigration agencies. New York City Council Member Carmen De La Rosa told Democracy Now on Friday: “I also witnessed NYPD helping the ICE vehicles whisk away our neighbours and come in and out of the hospital, so in my opinion, although we have been told that NYPD does not collaborate, there is a perception of, at the very least, coordinating efforts for ICE’s entrance and exit into our hospital.”
