The Communist Party of Pakistan (CPP) has issued a strong warning against the country’s involvement in the escalating war in Yemen, demanding that the government reject any military commitments that could drag Pakistan into another devastating regional conflict.
In a statement issued by its Central Secretariat, the CPP expresses serious concern over Pakistan’s military obligations to Saudi Arabia, warning that existing defence arrangements and the presence of Pakistani military personnel in the kingdom increase the danger of direct or indirect involvement in the war.
“Pakistan must not deploy its armed forces for offensive military operations in Yemen and must not become a party to the war there,” the Party declares, demanding that no Pakistani troops be sent into Yemen for combat purposes.
Recalling the Pakistani Parliament’s April 2015 resolution on the Yemen conflict, the communists warn against repeating the disastrous experience of involvement in the Afghan war in the service of imperialist interests, whose consequences continue to burden the country.
The CPP stresses that Pakistan’s working people must not pay the price of wars serving imperialism, monopoly capital and competing regional powers. With millions facing poverty, inflation and economic insecurity, the Party demands that national resources be directed towards employment, education, healthcare and social development rather than foreign military adventures.
Condemning imperialist interference, sectarian divisions and proxy warfare, the Pakistani communists call for an immediate ceasefire in Yemen, a negotiated political settlement and an independent foreign policy based on non-intervention and peaceful coexistence.
“No to imperialist wars. No to sectarian hatred. No to proxy wars. Yes to peace, secularism, democracy and social justice,” the statement concludes.
