The Tudeh Party of Iran has warned that the country faces an increasingly dangerous combination of renewed US imperialist aggression, economic collapse and mounting social discontent, calling for urgent political action to prevent another devastating war. In an editorial published on October 5 in Nameh Mardom, the Party’s central organ, the Iranian communists point to Washington’s growing military presence in West Asia and the contradictory statements of President Donald Trump as indications of an extremely fragile situation.
While Trump speaks of an imminent end to the war, the deployment of additional US aircraft carriers and military forces raises serious concerns about preparations for another attack on Iran.
The editorial stresses that the consequences of war, sanctions and the naval blockade are being borne overwhelmingly by the Iranian people, who face soaring prices, the collapse of the national currency and rapidly deteriorating living conditions. At the same time, it sharply criticizes the Islamic Republic’s neoliberal economic policies, widespread corruption and intensifying repression, arguing that these have aggravated the crisis and deepened popular suffering.
The Tudeh Party also condemns factions within the Iranian ruling establishment that benefit from the continuing state of “neither war nor peace,” warning that their confrontational policies risk dragging the country into a catastrophic new conflict.
Emphasizing the urgent need for direct diplomatic negotiations, the editorial advocates China’s participation as a mediator and international monitoring of a ceasefire, the lifting of the naval blockade and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Above all, the Tudeh Party calls for the immediate formation of a broad front of political and social forces committed to peace, national sovereignty and opposition to foreign intervention, capable of confronting the warmongers and profiteers of war and sanctions, and preventing Iran from being driven towards further destruction.
