The federal government plans an investment of 1.168 trillion pesos in generation, transmission, distribution and gas infrastructure projects to expand and modernize the National Electric System, reported the Secretary of Energy, Luz Elena González Escobar.
During President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning press conference, the official detailed that 794 billion pesos correspond to generation projects; 161 billion, to transmission, and 72.47 billion, to distribution.
Most of the resources, she explained, will be concentrated on the construction and commissioning of infrastructure to produce electricity, including renewable energy projects and combined cycle plants.
In transmission, the resources will go to expanding and modernizing the networks that carry electricity from generating plants to consumption centers. Meanwhile, the investment in distribution contemplates the expansion and modernization of the networks that bring supply to homes, businesses and industries, in addition to electrification works.
Explaining the origin of the resources for generation, Claudia Sheinbaum noted that it contemplates financing from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE), as well as mixed and private projects.
The investment also includes 140 billion pesos for gas pipeline infrastructure, of which 53 billion will be invested by the CFE and 87 billion by the National Natural Gas Control Center (Cenagas).
The Secretary explained that this infrastructure is necessary because the electricity sector consumes around 60 percent of the country’s natural gas, so expanding the network will make it possible to guarantee the supply required for the generating plants.
Among the CFE projects are the Cuxtal gas pipeline, which will carry gas from Tabasco to the Yucatán Peninsula; Centauro del Norte, which comprises two sections between Baja California and Sonora, and the rerouting of the Guaymas-El Oro gas pipeline, in Sonora.
On the part of Cenagas, the Coatzacoalcos II and Naco-Hermosillo-Guaymas projects are under construction. In addition, construction of the Reynosa bypass has been completed and it is about to enter operation.
In turn, the director general of the CFE, Emilia Esther Calleja Alor, reported that the expansion also contemplates 60 transmission projects, with which the national power grid will reach nearly 115,000 kilometers.
As part of the distribution and electrification works, Calleja Alor reported that between 2025 and 2026 more than 21,000 works were carried out, benefiting more than 600,000 people.
The Secretariat of Energy detailed that the investment also contemplates projects to expand electricity coverage and reduce gaps in access to the service. It added that currently 99.88 percent of households have electricity and that the goal is to reach 99.9 percent before the end of the administration.
