Spain is heading towards snap general elections on November 29, following Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s decision to dissolve parliament amid mounting social discontent and widespread protests over the housing crisis. The Communist Party of the Workers of Spain (PCTE) has announced that it will contest the elections, rejecting both the government’s social-democratic policies and the reactionary right-wing opposition.
Resolution of the Political Bureau of the PCTE
The Political Bureau of the PCTE has decided to contest the elections to the Spanish Parliament, scheduled for November 29, 2026. The Resolution reads:
"The snap election comes after a week of intense struggle for the right to housing. These mobilizations, which have attracted widespread participation and reached high levels of militancy, add to the growing number of struggles in individual sectors and local communities. This climate reveals the underlying frustration and anger among Spain’s working class over the continuing erosion of its purchasing power.
The government has called elections in the hope of channeling some of this discontent after eight years in power. The excuse that more ambitious policies could not be implemented because of parliamentary arithmetic is intended to conceal the fundamental problem. Take housing, for example: Pedro Sánchez’s second government, the first coalition government, had a sufficient parliamentary majority to pass three budgets and a housing law, yet it did not weaken the interests of landlords and rentiers in the slightest. The problem runs much deeper: as long as housing remains a commodity, and as long as governments operate within the limits of what capital and its laws deem possible, there will be no solution to the fundamental problems facing the working class.
The government cannot expect to emerge unscathed from almost a decade in office that has left workers poorer than they were at the beginning. The same applies to its junior coalition partner, which, as the parliamentary term comes to an end, faces yet another demonstration of the failure of its political strategy. Social democracy can offer us nothing but palliatives for our misery — palliatives that are becoming increasingly ineffective.
We believe that more and more workers are coming to recognize this, although the predominant response remains despair and political disengagement. This is precisely the fertile ground on which reaction thrives. We cannot accept the blackmail of using the specter of reaction to keep us politically trapped. But neither can we underestimate the danger it poses to our class. A capitalist offensive is underway to sweep away our rights and freedoms, and the PP and VOX are eager to become its most willing facilitators. What matters is that we begin to fight in the way only our class knows how.
**Enough half-heartedness, fear and compromise.** We must respond with boldness to the dark times of war and exploitation they seek to impose upon us. We must free our hands and raise our fists once again: regain our political strength as a class and fill every workplace and every aspect of our lives with struggle, organization and hope. We must build a powerful working-class opposition that, through the very course of its struggle, will shape the outlines of a new society: socialism-communism.
The PCTE will contest the elections to present an alternative candidacy to the capitalist consensus. A candidacy committed to building working-class opposition and equipping it with a united program of struggle against capitalism and reaction. Over the coming weeks, communist militants will take to every street, every square, every workplace and every educational institution to ensure that the communist ballot is available in as many electoral constituencies as possible.
Let us return to our own path: shoulder to shoulder, class against class".
