Thousands of Venezuela’s workers and students marched through Caracas under heavy rain on October 7 to commemorate Hugo Chávez’s 2012 election triumph, as Socialist Party leader Diosdado Cabello warned against foreign attempts to distort the his legacy.
Diosdado Cabello led the massive mobilization marking the popular victory of October 7, 2012, the last electoral campaign headed by Commander Hugo Chávez.
Cabello praised the resilience of the Bolivarian movement and stressed the urgency of keeping historical memory alive among young people.

Noticing how many young people had turned out, he emphasized the pedagogical duty the current political process demands. “These children are marching, but they did not live through Hugo Chávez. And we must tell them every day who Hugo Chávez was for this homeland,” Cabello emphasized.
Legacy Under Attack
Cabello also warned about cultural and audiovisual operations designed abroad to distort the image of the Bolivarian leader. in this sense, he pointed to a film recently presented in Colombia and accused its makers of trying to contaminate that legacy.
“They made that film to show it in 20 or 25 years, so people believe it was recorded at the moment of the commander’s departure and of the truth of the events,” he declared.

During his speech, Cabello defended the pride of popular and native identity against what he described as the classist and imperialist contempt of oligarchic sectors. “We, the marginalized, the Afro-descendants, the workers, the native people, the mountain folk, we have reasons to fight because we want a world of equals,” he asserted.
He argued that the right wing repeatedly makes the mistake of underestimating the capacities of a politically conscious people. “They underestimated Chávez, and today when they underestimate this people, deep down it is because they want to keep underestimating Hugo Chávez and the powerful popular movement,” he said.
Keeping Chávez’s Memory Alive
Diosdado Cabello affirmed Hugo Chávez broke with the old ways of doing politics, turning it into an act of deep affection, dignity and hope for historically excluded sectors, including workers, young people, women, and native and Afro-descendant communities.
He underscored the need to advance on all work fronts under the leadership of Venezuelan Acting President Delcy Rodríguez, ensuring daily grassroots organization in order to face any electoral or political battle. “The task now is to keep adding up with our Acting President at the helm. It is to keep adding every day. So that when that adversary measures itself against us in an election, whoever it is and whenever it is, we are able to win again,” he said.
He closed by remembering Chávez’s commitment at the historic campaign finale of October 4, 2012, when a storm hit Caracas and the revolutionary leader refused to change clothes before meeting the crowd, so as not to mark a distance from the rain-soaked people. “Let us be like Chávez, that is the path. And we will know that we deserve victory,” Cabello told the multitude.
