On Wednesday, National Assembly President Jorge Rodriguez confirmed that Venezuela has restored its rights before the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), following a decision adopted by the IPU Executive Committee and Governing Council during its 153rd Assembly in Tanzania.

The return of Venezuela’s legislature, elected at the polls for the 2026-2031 term, ends the exclusion promoted in previous years through extreme polarization and interference by sectors opposed to national sovereignty. Legislator Rodriguez said the measure was finalized following strategic talks held in September with IPU Secretary-General Anda Flip.

From Oct. 5-9, the IPU Assembly will meet in Arusha. Venezuela will be represented by Parliament’s Second Vice President Grecia Colmenares and lawmakers Saul Ortega and Jose Correa.

The reinstatement of the legislature once again positions Venezuela’s sovereign voice within the organization founded in 1889, which brings together 183 national parliaments from around the world and is headquartered in Geneva. This forum for interparliamentary diplomacy promotes multilateral political dialogue, peace, democratic governance and sustainable development among nations.

With the restoration of voting rights and active participation, Venezuela’s parliamentary representation consolidates recognition of its legitimate institutions internationally, defeating isolation schemes promoted by foreign agendas and promoting mutual cooperation with delegations from the continents represented at the global assembly.

The multilateral gathering brings together all of the organization’s statutory bodies, including the Governing Council, the Standing Committees, the Committee on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and the Committee on Middle East Questions, as well as the forums for Women Parliamentarians and Young Parliamentarians.

During the working sessions, the Governing Council will be responsible for electing the organization’s new president. The central focus of the deliberations addresses the optimization of good governance and the strengthening of communities through inclusion, institutional trust and the creation of equitable opportunities, providing a forum for strategic debate to promote global legislative action agreements.

The assembly will also approve resolutions focused on an emergency item and on the report submitted by the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights concerning strategies to ensure social development and the empowerment of people with disabilities, culminating in a final document agreed upon by the participating delegations.
