Mexico City. Although she previously said she should be very careful in her positions regarding the United States, President Claudia Sheinbaum maintained that there are many books, publications and even official documents that attest to the interventionist character of U.S. agencies. Moreover, she stressed, there are documents from these same agencies that prove interventionist actions, as occurred recently in events related to the Tlatelolco massacre.
Asked directly about the harsh terms in which former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador refers to the U.S. ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, for interventionist actions, Sheinbaum said that the position López Obrador set out in his book Pueblo on episodes such as the arrest of Ismael El Mayo Zambada was very interesting but, she noted, she must take care of her relationship with the United States and with the whole world.
When I know there is interference I say so without a problem, but I also have to seek to maintain a diplomatic relationship, and when we don’t agree we say so, and there is a basic principle, respect for our sovereignty.
President Claudia Sheinbaum
Elaborating on López Obrador’s statements on the Sinaloa case, the President said that, regarding the accusations the United States has made about that state, her government has always required evidence. She said that, in contrast, for the Mexican government there are clear elements in the Sinaloa case, since it is a fact that U.S. authorities received several relatives of Joaquín Guzmán Loera, El Chapo.
On another matter, she declined to comment on the anniversary of Morena, although she expressed pride in belonging to that movement.
