The Guardian has been accused of inverting reality in its attempt to undermine the Green Party’s conference motion declaring that Zionism is (and it is) racism.
The paper’s headline blared that:
British Jews more likely to identify as Zionist since 7 October attacks, research finds.
Percentage who feel ‘very emotionally attached to Israel’ rose to 51% in June 2025, up 13 points from before Gaza war
This claim horrified former UK ambassador Craig Murray, who commented:
The Guardian reports that the percentage of British Jews who strongly support Israel increased 13% since the start of the accelerated Genocide in Gaza.
Read that again.
Guardian fails to fact check its calculations
But investigative journalist and author Paul Holden has read the report, not just the Guardian’s coverage. He pointed out that the liberal rag is misrepresenting the facts.
In fact, Holden said that the article is using “made up statistics” to claim the opposite of reality. In a X post, he showed what this means.
The paper’s claims vastly exaggerate the increase in Jews supporting Israel, which has barely changed, but ignore a huge leap in those opposing it:
This article is plain wrong. Just literally repeats made up statistics. I’ll be writing to the readers editor shortly,
@guardian.This article says: “A study from the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR) titled “October 8 Jews: The Impact of October 7 on British Jewish Identity”, by Dr David Graham, found the percentage of British Jews who identified as Zionist rose seven points to 66%, between 2022 and 2025.”
This graph below are the actual figures. What it *actually* shows is the number of British Jews identifying as Zionist increased 1% between 2022 and 2025 to reach 64%; not 6% to reach 66%. But the number of anti-Zionists increased by 4%.

The graphic embedded in Holden’s X post
Holden went on to show that the number of UK anti-Zionist Jews has jumped by half from 8% to 12%, during Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
The data is literally the opposite of what the Guardian says. It shows significantly MORE Jewish people in the UK have become anti-Zionist than became Zionist between 2022 and 2025.
If you read the report the picture is complex and nuanced. It found that there used to be a high level of ambivalence about Israel (non-Zionist and don’t knows). Israel’s response on Gaza has forced more British Jews off the fence, mostly towards becoming anti-Zionist.
This is what the report says about the data, which is the opposite of what the Guardian said:
“Indeed, it is noteworthy that the only category that shows a clear direction of travel over the three years shown is ‘anti-Zionist’, rising from 8% in 2022 to 12% in 2025. Whilst it is important to understand that both these proportions and changes over time are small, might we be seeing the beginning of a trend in the British Jewish population?
Strikingly, we can see in the 2025 data that young people are much more likely to identify as anti-Zionists than their elders – indeed, almost a quarter of those aged in their 20s do so, more than three times as many as those in their 50s and 60s (Figure 17).
Holden found the Guardian’s ‘journalism’ “shocking”. Though “appalling” would be a better word, since no one who has watched its conduct during and since the Corbyn era will be ‘shocked’ by how it is behaving now.
Holden added:
Really just shocking reporting. There was a serious collapse in journalistic standards in the Corbyn years, including at the Guardian. This has the same whiff.
