Mexico City. The ambassador of Palestine to Mexico, Nadya Rasheed, asked Mexico to review the value chains of those national corporations linked to Israel’s settlements in Palestinian territory, in order to guarantee that trade and investment do not benefit those areas and that Mexican companies do not contribute to or profit from activities that, she said, sustain the occupation.
In a meeting with the president of the Senate, Higinio Martínez, she highlighted Mexico’s support for Palestine and its consistent defense of international law.
But it is not international law that we lack. What has been lacking are consequences when that law is systematically violated.

She recalled that the International Court of Justice has determined that Israel’s continued presence in the occupied Palestinian territory is illegal and must come to an end as soon as possible. It has also made clear that states have the obligation not to recognize or contribute to maintaining this illegal situation and must distinguish, in their relations, between Israel and the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967.
The ambassador noted that governments have begun to be seen translating these obligations into concrete measures. For example, last month, 12 countries, among them Canada, France and the United Kingdom, announced restrictions on trade with the illegal Israeli settlements.
Nadya Rasheed considered it possible to guarantee that there is no commercial exchange with those areas, to sanction those who carry out settler violence and those who facilitate it, and to ensure that companies do not profit from the occupation and from the illegal expansion of the settlements.
This is one of the areas in which she said she hopes to work closely with the Senate to analyze what additional measures Mexico can adopt, “including the review of the value chains of those national corporations whose links to the settlement economy have been pointed out by the UN, in order to guarantee that trade and investment do not benefit the illegal settlements and that Mexican companies do not contribute to or profit from activities that sustain the occupation.”
It is not about, she said, punishing or isolating a country. It is about guaranteeing that international law has meaning.
She added that, when violations of international law have no consequences and continue, the credibility of the entire international system is weakened.
She expressed confidence in working together with the senators to translate “our shared principles into concrete actions, because we cannot wait for there to be less Palestine left to protect.”
Higinio Martínez said that the Senate will do its part and that he will convey the diplomat’s message to his colleagues. He committed to continue working so that there is peace in Gaza, in the Middle East and throughout the world.
