IMMENSE pressure has been exerted to head off a serious investigation into war crimes by British troops deployed in Afghanistan during the Nato war on that desperately poor country.

To a certain extent that effort has been deflected and diverted but facts are stubborn and the disclosure made in the High Court earlier this week that armed forces personnel are suspected of carrying out what are rather quaintly described as “serious offences” emerged during investigations carried out earlier this year.
