Thousands of Volunteers Train for Potential U.S. Ground Invasion as Tehran Expands Military Preparedness.

Over the past several weeks, Iran has turned some of Tehran’s squares into military training grounds for thousands of volunteers who have signed up to defend their nation from a U.S. ground invasion.

They are becoming familiar with a war scenario that includes the use of machine guns, drones and anti-aircraft defense cannons, among other activities. At Hafte Tir and Iman Hosein squares, the “Devoted to Sacrifice movement (Jan-Fada) has established two training bases amid traffic and businesses.

At both sites, obstacle courses have been set up to recreate some of the conditions participants could face, beneath images of the three supreme leaders the Islamic Republic has had since its founding in 1979: Ruhola Jomeini, Ali Jamenei and Mojtaba Jamenei.

The exercises include handling machine guns, crawling under barbed wire, using anti-aircraft defense cannons through virtual reality goggles, launching projectiles, rappelling from a height and operating drones.

Volunteers Practice Urban Warfare Scenarios

Ali Kosari, deputy head of training for the Basij Organization, an Islamic militia subordinate to the Revolutionary Guard, said participants will initially receive training in six areas.

“The training areas planned for the Jan-Fada begin with urban warfare,” Kosari said, adding that volunteers will also be trained in the use of weapons such as the Kalashnikov, Browning pistol, Dragunov rifle, portable RPG anti-tank rocket launcher, and PK machine gun.

Training for over 500,000 people enrolled in 1,000 battalions of the national resistance is being carried out by different branches of Iran’s army and Revolutionary Guard. Jan-Fada movement spokesperson Sasan Zare said the training includes women and men of diverse backgrounds, from young people to older adults.

“I am here to learn how to use weapons and be able to help my country in this war against evil. If the Americans dare to launch a ground invasion, they will face hundreds of thousands or millions of patriots willing to give their lives to defend every inch of Iranian territory,” said Farzaneh, a 37-year-old housewife.

The Hafte Tir base is the second of its kind to open in Tehran after the one established in Iman Hosein Square last week, following two mass mobilizations of people on foot and motorcyclists that took place in the center of the Iranian capital.

These events are taking place more than seven months after the start of the U.S. war on Iran on Feb. 28, which, following a phase of intense cross-border bombardments and occasional exchanges of attacks and threats between the parties, has reached a stalemate.

Currently, Washington maintains its naval blockade of Iran and has intensified economic pressure on the Persian nation in an attempt to bring it to heel.
