On Sunday, the Matanzas Crocodiles, reigning Cuban baseball champions, began the 65th National Series with a 6-0 victory over the Cienfuegos Elephants on opening day.

The Industriales Lions also started with a win, defeating the Pinar del Rio Vegueros 5-1 at the Latinoamericano Stadium in Havana, considered the country’s premier baseball venue.
In other notable results, the Granma Alazanes easily defeated the Holguin Cubs 14-2, while the Sancti Spiritus Roosters beat the Camaguey Bulls 9-4.

The championship has been divided into a Western Zone and an Eastern Zone, each comprised of two groups of four teams, to minimize travel and optimize available resources.
Among the new features is the possibility for teams to have sponsors, in accordance with new regulations approved in the country for certain economic and sporting activities.
In addition, a 20-second pitch clock will be implemented between pitches, with or without runners on base, a rule designed to speed up the flow of games and reduce their duration.
