In Peru, at least nine regions will hold runoff elections for governor after no candidate reached the 30% threshold of valid votes needed to win outright, according to an exit poll by Datum for América Televisión.
The poll, with a 4% margin of error, projected clear winners in three regions: Callao, Madre de Dios, and Apurímac. In Callao, Pedro Spadaro of the far-right Renovación Popular party was projected to win; in Madre de Dios, Simón Horna of the center-left Ahora Nación; and in Apurímac, Guido Chahuaylla of the right-wing Progresemos. In all three, the top candidates exceeded 30% by a wide margin and led by more than the margin of error.
In Ayacucho, two candidates surpassed 30%, but the poll’s margin of error prevents determining a winner. In Cusco, former left-wing presidential candidate Verónika Mendoza was projected to win with 33.7% of valid votes.

The regions that will go to a runoff because all candidates fell well below 30% are Amazonas, Áncash, Arequipa, Ica, La Libertad, Lima, Moquegua, Piura, and Tumbes. In twelve other regions, the exit poll showed leading candidates hovering around 30%, but the margin of error makes it impossible to confirm whether they cleared the threshold. Those regions are Cajamarca, Huancavelica, Huánuco, Junín, Lambayeque, Loreto, Cusco, Puno, San Martín, Tacna, and Ucayali.
The runoff date has not been finalized. It was initially set for November 29, but the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) requested December 6 to guarantee the distribution of all electoral material.
More than 26.3 million voters were called to the polls on Sunday to elect twenty-five regional governors, 196 provincial mayors, and 1,892 district mayors. The electoral day proceeded normally and without incidents, except for an explosives attack on a school in the Andean town of Sorocucho, in the northern region of Cajamarca, which caused a fire and forced voting to be suspended there as a precaution.
Peruvian construction workers and union groups are mobilizing in Lima to protest policies of President Keiko Fujimori’s administration, with organizers set to present a national list of labor demands, including higher wages, better working conditions, and a shorter workweek.
