KATRIBU-Kalipunan ng Katutubong Mamamayan ng Pilipinas (Alliance of Indigenous Peoples of the Philippines) strongly condemned 4th IB elements for beating an Indigenous Mangyan-Hanunuo on September 21 in Barangay Waygan, Mansalay, Oriental Mindoro. The soldiers also ransacked his home and terrorized his family.
The group also condemned the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples (NCIP) for failing to protect the victim. It said that instead of ensuring his safety and pursuing accountability for those involved, the NCIP even urged the family to settle with the very people who mauled him, ransacked their home and threatened them.
According to the group, the incident shows how red-tagging is weaponized to justify the harassment and militarization of Indigenous communities.
During Indigenous Peoples’ Month, the group reiterated its call to end militarization in Indigenous communities, drive soldiers from ancestral lands, and respect Indigenous peoples’ right to live peacefully, safely and with dignity on their own land.
