“Lula is a man who came from poverty. He knows what it is to take a bus, to need medicine, food. Lula is our president!” Thousands showed up in São Paulo Saturday for a campaign-closing rally for Brazilian president and re-election candidate Lula da Silva – his last public event before the first round of elections Sunday. Attendees spoke to BT about defending the political process and the Workers’ Party (PT) project Lula represents. Many are already alleging US election interference. Polls indicate a likely runoff between progressive incumbent Lula and far-right Trump ally Flávio Bolsonaro, which would take place on Oct. 25.
