Half of British voters are in favor of the United Kingdom rejoining the European Union, according to a poll published this Saturday by The Guardian newspaper, conducted following Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s expressed preference for such a move.

However, the newspaper points out that Labour ministers have admitted concerns about reigniting the divisions caused by Brexit (the British exit from the EU), and therefore urge caution.
A few days ago, the British Prime Minister stated that he would analyze “all options” regarding the relationship with the EU, and did not rule out “going all the way” and proposing re-entry into the community bloc.
At the annual Labour conference held in September in Liverpool, northwest England, Burnham said that Brexit—supported in a 2016 referendum and executed in 2020—”did more harm than good.
“The poll published by The Guardian—conducted by the Messina Group firm—concluded that renegotiating the country’s relationship with the EU could increase the percentage of Labour votes, provided that the Prime Minister offered a new referendum and also campaigned in favor of rejoining the bloc.

According to the survey of 5,627 people between September 12 and 24, 50% were in favor of returning to the EU and 45% said they prefer the UK to remain outside the bloc.
These results will strengthen the position of those within the Government who wish to promise in the next elections—scheduled for 2029—that the Labour Party will negotiate re-entry, the newspaper says.
The electoral program with which Labour came to power in July 2024 rules out joining the single market and the customs union, so in principle, any fundamental change would have to be put to a vote in the next elections.
The option of returning to the EU has the support of a large part of the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, and the Scottish National Party (SNP), among others, while the Conservative Party and Reform UK are opposed.
