“We have to keep funding public schools." Students and teachers across Minneapolis are fighting back against a series of school board proposals that could close up to 16 public schools. Despite pouring rain, hundreds of public school educators and community members rallied on Tuesday in front of Minneapolis Public Schools’ (MPS) district administration headquarters, demanding the board delay a vote on the proposal. Many of the schools slated to shut down serve students whose educational needs are not supported elsewhere, such as Wellstone International High School which serves newly arrived immigrants and refugees. The student body at Wellstone International, like that of many other Minneapolis schools, is still recovering from Operation Metro Surge. Staff and alumni agree that a school closure would threaten overall student wellbeing.
