Long-time readers of Current Affairswill remember W.D. Ehrhart as the first poet to be published in the magazine, and as the writer of several great essays, including a reflection on the political uses of the American flag and a comparison of today’s Palestine protests to those he attended during the Vietnam War. This year, he’s published a new essay collection: Getting Shot At: Essays on War, Conflict and Culture Clash, available from McFarland Books, which compiles the last few years of his nonfiction work. He joined Current Affairs associate editor Alex Skopic to discuss the book, his influences as a poet, the ongoing war in Iran, and the worrying state of free speech and dissent in America.
