Speaking to the radio station Magic9, the expert highlighted the challenges the Gang Repression Force (FRG)—whose mandate was recently extended—will face in confronting and dismantling these criminal groups.
This military entity, whose continuation was confirmed by the UN on September 29, will operate on multiple fronts and gradually establish operational bases to maintain a permanent presence in areas that have been controlled by gangs for years, he explained.
“However,” he insisted, “it will be a complex task, given that even police officers—who know the terrain very well—find it impossible, despite their efforts, to wrest control of these territories from the armed groups.”
The analyst noted that the gangs maintain an iron grip on their zones of influence; they erect barriers and build walls to block access to their strongholds, dig trenches, and deploy scouts to gather intelligence.
“These irregulars,” he emphasized, “also use the civilian population as human shields and recruit new members for their ranks from among the locals, including minors.”
The expert pointed out that the FRG—created in September 2025 to replace the Multinational Security Support Mission—has yet to launch its offensive phase, although some members are conducting patrols in certain areas.
