“It is always a source of pride to hear a giant of world cinema like Giancarlo Giannini praise actors Carlos Luis González and Yadier Fernandez, as well as the entire Cuban team behind our shared adventure,” the filmmaker stated.

The Cuban Film Institute (ICAIC) is celebrating this national achievement and the presence of the production team at the 22nd edition of this major international event.

The special screening of *Baracoa* at the festival on September 29 was attended by Donas, producer Francesco Papa, and Giannini, who is part of the film’s cast.

According to the synopsis, the film explores the distant relationship between Felipe (Giannini)—an Italian revolutionary and friend of leader Fidel Castro—and his son Pepe, who harbors homophobic prejudices. It also highlights the special bond formed with his doctor, Jimmy, who works as the drag queen Estrellita by night.

Following Felipe’s death, his son and the doctor embark on a road trip from Havana to the city of Baracoa, at the country’s eastern tip, journeying through contemporary Cuba alongside two characters with opposing worldviews.

Prior to its screening at the Italian festival—which runs until October 4—*Baracoa* won the “Sumate” diversity award at the Havana International Festival of New Latin American Cinema.

In addition, it was screened out of competition at the Taormina Film Festival in Italy.
