“He is very deliberately evading some of the questions of ownership.” The UK’s social care system is broken. Not just because it’s underfunded, but because private interests are siphoning taxpayers’ money from it. Prime minister Andy Burnham has pledged to build a national care service, but he has not committed to ensuring it is properly state-owned and state-run. On Novara Live, Dalia Gebrial says she is concerned private interests will use the new service to line their pockets – and that it will therefore fail to deliver on caring for the vulnerable. Failing to tackle the financialisation of our public services, she says, will mean “we put a bunch of state money into social care and it doesn’t resolve the actual problems because it just means more money for shareholders, more money for offshore companies.”
