Thousands of students at the Atlanta University Center Consortium, the country’s largest consortium of historically Black colleges and universities, marched Thursday calling for justice after a grand jury declined to bring criminal charges in the case surrounding the death of Nolan Wells. On September 21, citing the state medical examiner, the grand jury declared the cause of death undetermined, while noting conditions “consistent with drowning.” Wells’ family and community have demanded answers and a proper investigation. Wells rode on a boat with a majority-white group of friends to Horn Island on July 4. Wells’ cell phone returned to the mainland on that boat without him. According to his friends, Wells chose to stay behind on the island. No one on that boat reported witnessing him drown. An extensive search of the island was conducted on July 5, but Wells’ body wasn’t found on the shoreline until the following day. The family’s attorney, civil rights advocate Ben Crump (@attorneycrump), highlighted two “blunt force” injuries on the back of Wells’ head, the lack of fluid or debris in his airways, and his stomach being empty, as details that warrant further investigation.
