Coahuila Attorney General Federico Fernandez confirmed that the two brothers, former students at the school, were detained after carrying out the attack with bladed weapons and explosive devices.
A student recounted the moments when the two attackers stormed the school and began issuing threats. “First warning, we’re going after all the women,” was the first shout he heard, just as he heard the explosion of homemade bombs.
“We ran out to lock ourselves in the classrooms and then put the chairs against the doors so they couldn’t get in. They grabbed the Spanish teacher and hacked him all over,” the young witness said, as reported by local outlet Vanguardia.

The text reads, “Following an armed attack at High School 13 in the La Union communal settlement in Torreon—which left one person dead and several others injured—residents managed to intercept and detain the alleged perpetrators, known as ‘Los Cuates.’ A video on social media shows the moment residents subdued the individuals before handing them over to the authorities upon their arrival.”
Maria Altamira, a resident of the La Union, said that when she heard the explosions, many people headed to the school and that residents themselves captured the attackers.
“We chased them through these hallways. People were hitting them. They were carrying machetes, knives, and they were two young boys,” she said.
The High School 13 attack occurred just over six months after another episode of violence at an educational institution, when a 15-year-old teenager shot and killed two teachers at a private High School in Lazaro Cardenas, in the state of Michoacan.
In that case, which occurred on March 24, the teenager entered Anton Makarenko High School with an AR-15 semiautomatic rifle and shot at the two teachers before being detained.
Torreon was also the scene of another school attack in January 2020, when an 11-year-old student killed a teacher, injured six other people, and later died by suicide at Cervantes School.
