Iraqis erupted in celebration in Baghdad on Wednesday, as the last of US-led coalition forces withdrew from the country after over two decades of occupation. Washington and Baghdad agreed in 2024 to a phased wind-down of US-led military operations. Attendees described the day as one of “great victory for all Iraqis” while warning that the US still retained a political and economic presence. “We want full sovereignty, absolute sovereignty so that Iraq is master of its own affairs,” said one participant.
