The Giro dell’Emilia is a one-day Italian classic held in the Emilia-Romagna region with a tradition spanning over a century. The inaugural edition took place on September 5, 1909, covering a distance of 340 kilometers—significantly longer than the current 198-kilometer route.
Since 2020, the event has been part of the UCI ProSeries (category 1.Pro), the second tier of the International Cycling Union’s global calendar, ranking just below the WorldTour. The race has established itself as a key classic in the final stretch of the cycling season.
Nairo Quintana leaves behind an impressive list of achievements, including victories in two of cycling’s three Grand Tours. In 2014, he became the first Colombian to win the Giro d’Italia, a race in which he also claimed two stage victories. Three years later, in 2017, he returned to the podium by finishing second in the general classification.
