Roger Mariaca and Santa Cruz prosecutor Alberto Zeballos were intercepted at Viru Viru airport in an operation whose authority and purpose remain unclear.


Bolivia’s Attorney General’s Office on Wednesday denounced the “kidnapping” of Attorney General Roger Mariaca and Santa Cruz departmental prosecutor Alberto Zeballos after the two officials were intercepted at Viru Viru International Airport in Santa Cruz.

According to preliminary information, Mariaca and Zeballos were intercepted inside the airport terminal during the night and subsequently apprehended by personnel whose institutional affiliation has not been established. The authority behind the operation, the legal order under which it was carried out and the reason for the apprehensions remained unclear.

There was also no official information on whether the two officials were subject to prior judicial orders or where they were taken after being apprehended.

Police operations in Santa Cruz

An intense police operation followed the incident at the airport, where Interpol personnel were also present. Access to the terminal was restricted for members of the press.

Police also intervened at the Santa Cruz Departmental Prosecutor’s Office and searched Mariaca’s home in the northern part of the city, according to the Attorney General’s Office.

Mariaca and Zeballos are among the officials whose U.S. visas were revoked by the U.S. government on the grounds that they were being denied entry to people linked to corruption and drug trafficking.
