The Labour party has been caught trying to control how its leader Andy Burnham’s conference speech is perceived and discussed. It’s a clear signal that the party continues to be the same ‘central command and control-freak’ outfit that it was under Starmer.

So Labour X users’ have been ordered to “ensure that you actively promote and praise” Burnham’s speech on the social media platform. So far, so business as usual. But the machine — controlled, as is Burnham, by the same people who ran Starmer — wants control even over what words of fake praise are used to gush over Burnham’s vibe — and gimmick-heavy, hope-lite performance.

So users are instructed accordingly. Not just a request for positive language, but a long list of terms that users must use:

This speech must be described as truly exceptional, visionary, inspiring, invigorating, beautiful, powerful, courageous, statesmanlike, refreshing, heartfelt, authentic, unifying, intelligent, thought-provoking, necessary, timely, historic, transformative and a blueprint for the future.

Not just that, but if they find anyone criticising the speech, it must be “challenge[d] and report[ed]”:

Nothing desperate or ‘trying too hard’ to see here. Move along.

This control-freakery, supposedly, “show[s] the strength and unity of our movement”. Ahem. Strength and unity — let alone any actual vision, inspiration etc etc — don’t need a response that is not just choreographed but prescribed down to the words that ‘must’ be used to describe it.
