On Tuesday, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Brazil’s president and a candidate for re-election in the Oct. 4 election, held his penultimate mass campaign rally in Salvador de Bahia, where he highlighted the macroeconomic achievements of his administration.

“The lowest cumulative inflation in four years, the lowest unemployment in history and the largest increase in average wages,” the Workers’ Party leader said and recalled what he told Brazilian businesspeople at a recent meeting.

“This is very simple: Either you choose me or you choose a fool whose only experience is associating with militiamen and having a chocolate factory to launder money,” Lula said, referring to Flavio Bolsonaro, the far-right candidate and son of Jair Bolsonaro, the former president who is under house arrest.

The leftist leader thus referred to investigations linking Flavio Bolsonaro to relatives and members of paramilitary groups made up of corrupt police officers and former police officers who control certain areas of Rio de Janeiro.

Prosecutors investigated the far-right senator Bolsonaro for hiring relatives of militiamen as ghost employees in order to take their salaries during his time as a Rio de Janeiro state lawmaker. That money was laundered through a chocolate shop. However, key evidence was annulled and the case was closed.

The text reads, “A rumor regarding concerns within a faction of the Catholic Church—specifically about a potential Flavio Bolsonaro victory and the consequent stripping of Our Lady of Aparecida’s status as Patroness of Brazil—has had an impact. Over the past week, Lula’s support among Catholics rose from 46 to 50 points as he captured votes from undecided voters in that demographic, according to a poll released today by Quaest. Flavio Bolsonaro saw no gains. Lula’s campaign has entered the battle for the faith vote and appears to have found the far-right candidate’s Achilles’ heel.”

Lula also called on Flavio Bolsonaro to explain his relationship with Daniel Vorcaro, a banker who was jailed over a multimillion-dollar fraud and who helped finance a film about the life of Jair Bolsonaro.

“He has to explain whether he participated in orgies. Because Vorcaro, when he could not corrupt people with money alone, brought Swiss, Swedish and Dutch women to hold orgies in our country, involving many people in politics,” Lula said, referring to reports about the banker’s parties and his guests.

On Wednesday, the Workers’ Party candidate will hold his final campaign rally in Juiz de Fora, a city in the state of Minas Gerais. According to the latest polls, Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro are technically tied in voter support ahead of a potential runoff, which is scheduled to be held on Oct. 25.
