Colombian Senate opposition leader Iván Cepeda denounced Thursday that a plan is being orchestrated to implicate him in alleged illegal activities and later prosecute him in the United States.
In a post on X, Cepeda said the effort is the reactivation of a stratagem that U.S. agencies could not carry out in the past through the fabrication of false testimonies. He also said “dirty campaigns” are being run on social media with the help of “useful idiots in the service of the far right.”

The congressman said the goal is to physically, judicially and morally annihilate those who lead the Historical Pact, the party to which the country’s most important progressive groups have adhered. He warned that another aim is to divide the movement, “since that is the main necessary condition for fascism to triumph.”
“They will not be able to destroy my dignity, my ethical convictions or my political life. Mine is the power of truth,” he stressed.

The denunciation adds to others made by the Historical Pact following attacks against other legislators in its ranks. The party on Wednesday rejected identity theft and disinformation campaigns against women who exercise political opposition to the government of Abelardo De la Espriella. In a communication released on official channels, it referred specifically to attacks against Senator Isabel Zuleta and Representative to the Chamber for Bogotá María Fernanda Carrascal.
According to the denunciation, in recent days a video manipulated with artificial intelligence circulated in which Zuleta’s identity is impersonated and statements she never made are attributed to her. The statement added that this action is joined by staged videos, false posts and alleged messages used to deceive the public, affect the reputation of the congresswomen and attack their political activity
