Ethiopian Finance Minister Ahmed Shide made these statements when addressing the Horn of Africa Initiative (HoAI) ministerial meeting, which brought together sector ministers from across the sub-region and high-level representatives from development partners in Nairobi, Kenya.

Shide, participating virtually, highlighted key advances in regional connectivity and economic integration, including the refined petroleum products pipeline between Ethiopia and Djibouti, which will bolster energy security and lower logistics costs.

The finance minister also highlighted Ethiopia’s chairmanship of the Eastern Africa Power Pool (EAPP) Council of Ministers and the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD)’s full operational status, underscoring the importance of both milestones in expanding Addis Ababa’s contribution to clean energy development throughout the region.

Given that the meeting focused on trade facilitation and energy integration in the Horn of Africa, he expressed Ethiopia’s firm support for the outcomes of the trade ministers’ meeting held in this capital on September 3, including the establishment of the Regional Trade Facilitation Committee.

Shide welcomed the conclusions of a regional energy study and a follow-up exercise, which identified the leading obstacles to greater energy integration and indicated that Ethiopia is making progress as planned in fulfilling its commitments.
