Mexican actress and Oscar nominee Yalitza Aparicio will be honored with the Icon Award during the 15th edition of the Georgia Latino International Film Festival (GALIFF), taking place from September 30 to October 4, 2026, in Atlanta, USA.

The award will be presented on the festival’s opening night at the historic Fox Theatre. The ceremony will be part of a commemorative edition featuring Mexico as the Guest Country of Honor.

According to a statement from the Georgia Latino Film Alliance (GALFA), the Icon Award recognizes figures whose careers, influence, and international reach have contributed to the visibility and advancement of Latino culture within the film and entertainment industries.

Aparicio gained international acclaim for her role in Roma, a film directed by Alfonso Cuarón that earned her an Oscar nomination for Best Actress. Her performance marked a significant milestone for Mexican and Latino representation in global cinema.

Since then, the actress has established herself as a voice associated with cultural representation and Hispanic pride. “Yalitza Aparicio embodies the power of cinema to transcend borders, elevate our culture, and allow our stories to be seen around the world,” said Yvette Moïse, president and co-founder of GALFA.

Moïse noted that the award recognizes not only a specific performance or moment but also Aparicio’s cultural impact, the pride she represents for the Hispanic community, and the importance of celebrating Latino talent on the international stage.

Meanwhile, José Márquez, executive director of GALIFF, stated that the actress’s career reflects the Alliance’s mission: to celebrate Latino voices, honor our cultural heritage, and create a platform where our stories and talent can reach audiences around the world.

For 15 years, GALIFF and GALFA have created opportunities for Latino filmmakers, actors, producers, students, and professionals. Likewise, both organizations have fostered connections between Georgia’s film industry and the international Latino creative community.
