Javier Milei’s government is pushing an extreme sanction against scientist Virginia Aparicio through the Board of Directors of the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), aimed not only at her dismissal but at her removal from office, which would mean a lifetime ban on holding public office.

TeleSUR’s correspondent reported that Aparicio has spent 30 years studying the effects of glyphosate on the human body, a toxic herbicide used by large corporations and the agricultural industry. The scientist’s latest study, carried out in collaboration with INTA, CONICET, the Center of Scientists and Technologists and the European Union, shows that 86% of Argentinians have glyphosate in their bodies, including through the consumption of yerba mate. The action against Aparicio is framed within the defense of agro-industrial corporate interests and the explicit censorship of evidence on the impact of agrotoxins on the population, according to the report.

In the study, the herbicide produced by multinational Bayer was detected in 100% of fecal samples from Buenos Aires Province. Argentina was also the country with the highest concentration of pesticides among all study participants.

Given the data revealed by the research, the Milei administration took the step of dismissing Aparicio from INTA. But qualified voices and journalists following the case warn that the government is seeking a way to permanently remove her from her professional activity in the public sphere.

Aparicio says that with this action against her, what they are trying to do is intimidate other scientists so they do not publish studies related to public health that could directly affect agricultural companies, intimidating them and stripping her of her scientific identity.
