Dozens of Moroccan cities have seen protests and demonstrations in recent days in solidarity with the Palestinian people and against the expansion of diplomatic relations between Morocco and Israel, after Rabat announced it would raise bilateral representation to full embassies and exchange ambassadors.
The Moroccan Commission for Supporting the Nation’s Causes said it organized 76 demonstrations under the slogan “Friday for Al-Aqsa and against normalization.” The protests were called on September 25 in 46 cities, including Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakech, Tangier, Fez, Agadir, Oujda, Tetouan, Kenitra and Salé.
Participants waved Palestinian flags and banners, demanded an end to the war in Gaza and the cessation of cooperation with Israel, and chanted slogans against converting the Israeli Liaison Office in Rabat into an embassy.

The protests continued over the weekend at the invitation of the Moroccan Front for Supporting Palestine and Opposing Normalisation, which announced national actions between September 25 and 27 against the new measures in bilateral relations. Marrakech saw a large march through several streets, while protests were held in Rabat, Agadir, Benslimane, El Jadida, Azrou and other areas. The Moroccan press reported that authorities prevented demonstrations in Tangier and M’diq, while security forces surrounded a gathering in Agadir to prevent it from becoming a march.

Moroccans have staged protests against the visit of Israeli Transport Minister Miri Regev, with demonstrators in Marrakech and Rabat demanding her departure and chanting against normalisation with Israel.

The actions followed Morocco and Israel’s agreement on September 16 in New York to raise their diplomatic missions from liaison offices to full embassies. The agreement was announced after a trilateral meeting involving Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar and U.S. Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz. It also included expanded direct flights, finalized economic agreements on investment protection and prevention of double taxation, and reciprocal visits by senior officials.
