Quaest survey shows Brazilian president ahead six days before the first round.

On Monday, polling firm Quaest published a voting-intention survey showing that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is the favorite to win the upcoming presidential election.

Six days before the first round of the election, the Workers’ Party leader has a five-percentage-point lead over far-right opposition candidate Flavio Bolsonaro.

Currently, the Quaest poll shows Lula with 39% of the vote, two points more than last week, and Bolsonaro with 34%.

The remaining candidates do not exceed 4% of voting intention, while undecided voters fell to 5% and 10% of voters said they would cast a blank or invalid ballot or abstain.

In the event of a hypothetical second round, which would be held Oct. 25 if no candidate receives more than 50% of the vote, the poll shows a technical tie, with each candidate at 42% of voting intention.

The Quaest poll, commissioned by the newspaper O Globo and TV network Globo, was conducted through 2,400 interviews with voters across the country between Thursday and Sunday.

It has a margin of error of two percentage points. These figures were therefore obtained after the ban on sports betting and online casinos announced by Lula on Sept. 25.

On Sunday, Oct. 4, at least 158 million Brazilians will go to the polls to elect the president of the republic and 27 regional governors, and to renew the Chamber of Deputies and two-thirds of the Senate.
