The Irish football squad did not shake hands with Israeli players at a Uefa Nations League match in Hungary on Sunday. The fixture had been mired in controversy ever since the two teams were drawn to play one other in February. Despite a nationwide campaign in Ireland urging its footballers to boycott the match over Israel’s genocide in Gaza, the majority of the Irish players voted to go ahead. But Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazuno decided to boycott the match. The remaining players agreed in advance to wear black armbands and refuse the pre-match handshake ceremony to signal their unease playing the Israeli team. Around 140 pubs in Ireland and abroad refused to show Sunday’s game. Israel has killed 567 Palestinian footballers since the beginning of the genocide in Gaza.

Surprised there isn’t more mainstream international press condemnation of Ireland here. I would expect the usual suspects to be wailing about antisemitism.
