At least four people were killed and 12 remain missing after an avalanche buried the base camp of Himlung Peak in Nepal, mountain authorities said Monday.

The avalanche struck the 7,126-meter peak’s base camp on Sunday morning, burying tents beneath a deep layer of snow. Two bodies were recovered Sunday night and two more on Monday morning, said Rajendra Lama, secretary general of the Nepal Mountaineering Association.

Mountaineer Mingma G Sherpa, who is leading the rescue effort, said the avalanche struck while 14 kitchen staff from two climbing teams and two climbing guides were at the camp.

Eight mountain guides from the National Mountain Guides Association of Nepal are now at the site, along with members of other rescue teams. Search operations began early Monday and were continuing, Sherpa said.

Poor weather delayed the rescue effort on Sunday, preventing teams from reaching the site until the afternoon.

“Search operations are continuing. We could have saved lives on Sunday, but because of the bad weather, we only reached the accident site in the afternoon,” Sherpa said.

Nepal faces further disasters

The avalanche occurred as Nepal continues to recover from a glacial flood on Aug. 26 that killed 1,453 people and left 5,285 missing, according to the latest official figures.

Heavy rains since Thursday have also triggered floods and landslides in several parts of the country, killing at least 21 people, according to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.
