Before 20,000 people in Hermosillo, days ahead of a Senate debate, the president defended requiring sole Mexican nationality to run for president or governor.

Hermosillo, Sonora. The President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, defended the reform that prohibits dual nationality, three days before the bill is debated in the Senate, reiterating that “no president can have two masters or swear to two flags.”

At her penultimate accountability event, she asserted that there are “conservatives and reactionaries who want to return to the past,” in reference to 36 years (starting in 1982) characterized by “selling out the country, servility, economic models designed from abroad, imposed on the government of Mexico.”

She criticized that “there were many who did not raise their hand for that reform” and affirmed that “no foreign power determines the destiny of Mexico and no elite determines the destiny of the homeland.”

Democracy, she stated, resides in the people, “it is not determined by a few. That is the most important part of the struggle since Independence.”

Sheinbaum has explained that she does not seek to eliminate dual nationality for Mexicans who live in other countries, but rather to establish, as a requirement for those who aspire to the Presidency and governorships, holding only Mexican nationality.

Before some 20,000 people gathered at the Multipurpose Center of Hermosillo, the president went through different episodes of national history, from Independence to the Mexican Revolution, and recalled the 1914 U.S. intervention.

To this day, the powers see Mexico as a possibility with its natural resources, but here the people are always present, with their history, with their memory, defending the homeland.

Social Justice in Sonora

On her seventh visit to the state, she highlighted her administration’s actions on social justice, among them the Yaqui Justice Plan, through which more than 45,000 hectares have been restored and works related to water, infrastructure, roads, education and well-being have been carried out.

She also highlighted the work to address the environmental problems of the Sonora River, where a remediation program remains in place following the 2014 contamination by the Buenavista del Cobre mine, owned by Grupo México.

The President also mentioned the resolution of the Cananea labor conflict, as well as the increase in the minimum wage and the Well-Being Programs, which she defended as rights derived from public resources and not as handouts.
