To mark the 2026 International Day of Peace, the African chapters of World BEYOND War organized awareness-raising activities on issues that threaten peace in their countries. In Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, The Gambia, and South Sudan, these activities also served as opportunities to mobilize support and advocate for peace.

In Cameroon, more than 5,000 people from various walks of life took part in a peace march. Members of the World BEYOND War Cameroon chapter were there alongside numerous organizations, including Women’s Peace Initiatives and WILPF Cameroon, with whom they collaborate. This mobilization aimed to remind people that peace is built every day within families, neighborhoods, and communities, with everyone’s participation. The chapter’s message was to emphasize that the war-free Cameroon we seek will be built without violence. The march took place on September 19. On September 21, the Africa organizer, Guy Feugap, participated in a Parliamentary Dialogue on Peace in Cameroon.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the South Kivu chapter has focused its efforts on raising awareness among its members about the importance of peace in a region and a country that has faced more than three decades of armed conflict. The chapter’s members are committed to fostering a culture of peace and civic engagement in their country, even as the situation is marked by violence and insecurity.

In South Sudan, the chapter coordinator took part in a prayer campaign for lasting peace.

The campaign, held on September 21 across the country and within East African communities, represents a call for peace by Christian believers. The event brought together religious leaders and many members of the faithful. In his message, the chapter coordinator called for continued advocacy efforts in support of lasting peace, love, and unity in South Sudan, Africa, and around the world.

National Campaign in The Gambia on Access to Electricity

The Gambia chapter of World BEYOND War chose to use Peace Month in September to draw attention to the country’s electricity situation, which is seen as an issue that affects people’s daily lives and poses a threat to social peace. The chapter noted that it had participated the previous year in public demonstrations calling for a more reliable electricity system. It also highlighted the paradox of a population that expresses dissatisfaction with the difficulties it faces, yet some of whom are reluctant to participate in civic actions aimed at demanding change. Participation in this campaign allowed the chapter to broaden the discussion on peace to include the concrete living conditions of the people, calling on citizens to become more involved in bringing about change.
