The attack occurred in the Dera Ismail Khan district, in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, when an attacker detonated a vehicle loaded with explosives against the Aman Mela post. The Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or TTP, claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement.

Pakistan has experienced an increase in insurgent attacks in recent years, many of them claimed by the TTP and by the outlawed Balochistan Liberation Army, or BLA, a separatist group that operates mainly in the neighboring province of Balochistan.

The TTP, an independent group allied with the Afghan Taliban, operates from Afghan soil, which has led to recurrent accusations from Pakistani authorities.

The most recent attack comes after border clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which Islamabad claims killed 13 Afghan Taliban. These hostilities threaten mediation efforts by China, Turkey, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia. Dera Ismail Khan, the location of the latest attack, is near South Waziristan, a former insurgent stronghold.
