On Friday, an official report stated that the impact on sports reached US$36.2 million in 2025, attributing these losses to the U.S. blockade and sanctions that limit international operations and contracts.

The report indicates that more than US$20.3 million corresponds to expenses associated with international financial transactions, made more expensive by the restrictions affecting Cuban banking institutions.
According to the document, limitations on using the dollar force transactions through intermediaries and alternative mechanisms, which increase the costs of contracts related to sports activities.
The greatest economic impacts were concentrated in the acquisition of resources for sports education and athlete training, including programs for adaptive and Paralympic sports. The report also includes losses linked to the departure of athletes and coaches contracted for international programs.

Another impact noted is the decrease in foreign clients at events and training camps held in Cuba, which reduces income from international sporting activities. Authorities warn that this situation could affect the organization of competitions on the island and limit the presence of foreign participants.
Cuba maintains a distinguished record in international sports, with 244 Olympic medals: 86 gold, 70 silver, and 88 bronze. In the Paralympic arena, Cuban athletes have won 101 medals, including 49 gold, 23 silver, and 29 bronze, since the 1992 Barcelona Games.
However, the sports sector faces additional difficulties stemming from the emigration of athletes, lack of equipment, infrastructure, and funding, which have overall impacted sporting results in recent years.
