The rate of sea level rise has more than doubled in recent decades, a phenomenon that has caused deep concern in various international forums, leading countries to adopt this Thursday at the 81st General Assembly the UN Declaration on Sea Level Rise to shield the most vulnerable communities.
The text agreed after months of intergovernmental negotiations promotes scientific observation, the improvement of models and the optimization of early warning systems to accurately foresee future impacts. This information will make it possible to plan ports, hospitals, energy grids and transportation systems according to projected changes.

One of the most complex points resolved in the document is the legal continuity of States. The text establishes a presumption in favor of the institutional survival of those countries that lose physical territory, guaranteeing the preservation of their sovereignty, their responsibilities and their seat at the United Nations.

Under the same principle, maritime zones previously established in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea will be respected, protecting these nations’ ocean rights.
