Despite the changing nature of the game and the rising rate of transfers between clubs, some players remain striking exceptions, having chosen to stay with the same team for many years and played hundreds of matches, before their appearance totals became historic records that are difficult to match.
The Spaniard Koke, captain of Atlético Madrid, has brought this phenomenon back into the spotlight after taking his tally to 748 official matches with the Spanish capital club, thereby retaining his hold on the record for the most appearances in Atlético’s history and becoming one of the most prominent symbols of loyalty to a single club in European football.

Ryan Giggs… 963 matches for Manchester United
At the top of the list stands Welshman Ryan Giggs, who played 963 official matches for Manchester United, having spent his entire professional career with the English club.
Over more than two decades with the first team, Giggs became one of Manchester United’s most iconic figures during the Alex Ferguson era, winning 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League titles before bringing his career with the club to a close in 2014.
Paolo Maldini … 902 appearances for Milan
The Italian Paolo Maldini reached the 900-appearance milestone for Milan, having spent 25 years with the first team, becoming one of the club’s most iconic figures and the player most closely associated with its shirt.
Maldini played 902 official matches for Milan, including 647 in Serie A, and won 26 titles, comprising seven Serie A titles and five European Cups and Champions League titles.
Javier Zanetti… 858 matches for Inter Milan
Over the course of 19 years, the Argentine Javier Zanetti was one of the most consistent players in Inter Milan’s ranks, having played 858 official matches from the time he joined the club in 1995 until his retirement in 2014.
Zanetti wore the Inter captain’s armband for 13 years, winning 16 titles with the club, and captained the side during the historic treble in 2010, when the club won the Serie A, the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League.

Englishman Ian Callaghan holds a special place in Liverpool’s history, having made 857 appearances for the club, a record for the most appearances in the club’s history.

Igor Akinfeev… 818 matches for CSKA Moscow
Since making his debut for CSKA Moscow’s first team in 2003, Russian goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev has remained with the club, making 818 official appearances for them.
During this career, Akinfeev has won six Russian Premier League titles, eight Cup titles and eight Super Cup titles with CSKA, as well as the UEFA Cup in 2005, and he is still capable of adding to his tally.
Francesco Totti… 786 matches for Roma
It is difficult to discuss icons of loyalty to a single club without mentioning Francesco Totti, who spent his entire professional career with Roma, becoming one of the players most closely associated with a single club in the history of Italian football.
