On Thursday, U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly ordered the lifting of U.S. President Donald Trump’s ban on CNN, MS NOW and Politico and gave his administration an ultimatum to explain why the three media outlets cannot access the White House.

Politico reporter Kyle Cheney mentioned that Kelly set a deadline of 12:30 p.m. local time to receive explanations for the failure to comply with the order after the three media outlets reported access restrictions affecting some of their personnel.
On Sept. 18, Trump announced a ban on the newspaper Politico and the television networks CNN and MS NOW for disseminating “fake news” and later accused them of threatening national security through their reporting. The three media outlets responded with a lawsuit, and Judge Kelly ordered today that their access be restored, ruling that the ban was imposed without “due process.”
Nevertheless, their journalists were unable to access the White House while Trump was receiving Chinese President Xi Jinping. The ceremony was not broadcast by Fox and other television networks in solidarity with the banned media outlets.

The New York Times (NYT) informed that ABC, which was designated to provide coverage under the rotating pool system, remains inactive in solidarity over the failure to comply with the court order.
“It is striking and symbolic that none of the major television networks in the United States has broadcast live images of Trump and Xi. Normally, a highly significant summit with a rival superpower would have interrupted regular programming. However, the networks have chosen not to provide images because of the White House ban against CNN, MSNBC and Politico,” the NYT said.
The major networks have responded to the measure with a boycott of audiovisual coverage of President Trump, while professional organizations described the decision as a ban on press freedom. International news agencies such as The Associated Press, Reuters, AFP, Bloomberg News and EFE joined a statement defending press freedom and the right to report, promoted by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
“The First Amendment protects the right of the press to report without fear of censorship or retaliation from those in power. It protects Americans’ right to be informed,” the statement said. The New York Times, The Washington Post, N+ Univision and El Pais, among others, have also signed the statement.
