On Thursday, Venezuela won the gold medal in women’s football at the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe after defeating Chile 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

The final was played at the Rosario Football Association stadium, where Chile took the lead in the second half with a goal from Antonella Martinez. However, Venezuela mathced in the 90th minute thanks to a penalty converted by Karla Alfonzo.
In the penalty shootout, goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales was decisive in securing the Venezuelan victory and the gold medal. The bronze medal went to Uruguay, which also defeated Paraguay in a penalty shootout, 4-2, after the match ended 1-1.
In taekwondo, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia, and Brazil won gold medals. Yohandri Granados’s victory in the under-58 kg category and Jose Acuña’s win in the men’s up-to-68 kg category were noteworthy.

In women’s taekwondo, Colombian Andrea Ramirez won gold in the under-49 kg category, while Brazilian Maria Pacheco triumphed in the up-to-57 kg category.
Table tennis crowned Argentina and Venezuela as champions in doubles. Horacio Cifuentes and Santiago Lorenzo took the men’s gold, while Camila Obando and Cristina Gomez secured the women’s title for Venezuela.
After the day, Brazil leads the overall medal count with 222 medals (93 gold, 69 silver, and 60 bronze), followed by Argentina with 203 medals and Colombia with 141, remaining the three main powers of the South American Games.
