Israel Threatens the Existence of the Palestinian People: Abbas

Palestinian president urges international community to prevent another Nakba and calls for acceleration of the Gaza peace plan.

In a televised address to the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas warned of the existential danger Israel poses to the Palestinian people.

“In the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, settler expansion is accelerating. The West Bank is being fragmented, and Jerusalem is being isolated and Judaized,” he said.

“Settler terrorism is escalating under the protection of the occupying forces, while the crimes of land theft, home demolition, checkpoints and raids continue under a system of laws, measures and practices, all built on racial discrimination, ethnic cleansing and state terrorism.”

“The danger is no longer limited to undermining the two-state solution and preventing the realization of the Palestinian state. It has now come to threaten the very life and existence of the Palestinian people on their homeland,” Abbas stated.

“What is taking place in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem are not isolated incidents, but rather a malicious colonial scheme aimed at making the lives of Palestinians more difficult in their homeland and forcing them to leave it.”

More than 21,000 children have been killed by Israel in Gaza.

The Palestinian leader also urged the international community not to allow another catastrophe (“Nakba”) like the one perpetrated in 1948, when Israeli occupation forces carried out an ethnic cleansing of an estimated 700,000 to 750,000 Palestinians.

Abbas called for accelerating the U.S.-backed Gaza peace plan, which is about to mark its first anniversary, so that “the transition phase does not become a permanent situation,” without “concrete deadlines” or a “political horizon.”

He recalled that the second phase of the plan has not begun to be implemented and urged the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territory and the start of reconstruction. “Unfortunately, none of this has materialized on the ground.”

“We have long warned the international community through the UN General Assembly and through the Security Council that these Israeli policies, in violation of international law, would destroy the two-state solution. And that this is what is happening now,” Abbas pointed out.

The Palestinian leader delivered his address by videoconference because the administration of President Donald Trump had barred him from entering the United States to participate in the United Nations General Assembly.

A similar ban, however, was not applied to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who was able to enter the United Nations headquarters despite the International Criminal Court having ordered his arrest for crimes against humanity.
